Comedy club where mums and dads can have a laugh and babies are welcome

Hey new parents – do you want to have a laugh without the faff of trying to find a babysitter?

Then head down to the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool which has launched a baby-friendly stand-up comedy club for families.

Mums and dads are invited to It’s a Scream Comedy Club featuring three brilliantly funny stand-up comedians from the professional circuit.

Babies are welcome (up to the age where they can understand rude words). And everyone in the audience will have a nipper with them – so it’s OK if they giggle, cry or have one of those tantrums that makes you walk out of Tesco halfway through the big shop.

The theatre trialed the comedy club for 160 parents last year (with at least 70 of them wearing nappies) and took their feedback on board to ensure the club fits in with families’ needs.

This time, there will be fewer baby jokes and the timeslot has been moved so you can grab a sandwich from the cafe to take through with you. The shows start at 1pm and will finish by 2.30pm for those who need to do the school run.

The show was organised by Sam Avery, a local stand up and Chief Executive of The Comedy Trust: He said: “I remember when my kids were first born, we did all the classes and they were great, but after a while, we were desperate for a change of scenery.

“The great thing about these gigs is that the audience is just happy to be out of the house and also to be in an environment where they don’t have to worry about a crying or unsettled baby – because it honestly doesn’t matter.

“We also know about the physical benefits of laughter and how it can help connect people – so it’s a great way of injecting that into people’s day.”

Kevin Fearon, Executive Producer at Liverpool’s Royal Court, added: “We were chatting in the office about new parents and how, when you have a new baby, you can lose touch with some of the things that you did before they came along. This is a way for parents to feel like grown-ups again – but without the cost and hassle of a babysitter!”

So come down to the theatre for a couple of hours of fun and giggles that will make you feel like a grown-up again.

Suitable for those over 18 years, or under 18 months, with strong language used on stage. Buggy parking and baby changing available.

It’s a Scream Comedy Club will be held on 15th Feb, 5th April and 14th June.

Tickets are £7.50 (babies get in free) and are available from the Royal Court Box Office, or on 0151 709 4321
